Toshiba Preps 128GB Solid-State Notebook Drive
Toshiba said this week they plans to ship before April 128 GB solid state disk, which will appear first in Toshiba notebooks sold in Japan.
The disc, which has no moving parts, arrives at unusually high capacity at a lower cost than most SSDs through the use of multi-level cell NAND flash technology. Most are single-level cell SSD drives, which store 1 bit of data in each memory cell. MLC drives, on the other hand, store 3 or more bits in each cell. While MLC disks have a transfer speed slower and more energy consumption, they are also much less expensive to achieve.
Nevertheless, SSDs generally cost more than traditional multiple hard disk drives. In justifying the higher cost, manufacturers claim SSDs are faster and more reliable and robust, since there are no moving parts. Recently, however, avian researcher Securities disputed those assertions, saying that customers were dissatisfied returning SSD-basedDell (Dell) notebooks in large numbers. The computer manufacturer said that the bird flu of the estimated rate of return is far too high.
Toshiba believes its latest DSS strikes the right balance between price and performance. “We believe that Toshiba MLC SSDs offer the right combination of cost and performance today to meet the demanding needs storage for laptops and ultra-mobile PC,” Scott Nelson, Vice President of the memory division for Toshiba Toshiba America Electronic Components, said in a statement released Tuesday.
Toshiba, which has not released prices, “says the new disc has a reading speed of 100 MB per second and a write speed of 40 MB per second, making it faster than 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm disk drives. The company asserts that it reaches the high level of performance through the use of a SATA II interface and a new controller MLC.
Accordingly, the last player performs very well in the speed of Windows Vista boot, application loading, current usage, and to facilitate the search for the virus, according to Toshiba.
The new product weighs about three hundredths of a pound and is embedded in a module form factor. Toshiba has also begun mass production of a 64 GB module board. The company plans to begin sampling next month of the same size and SSDs 1.8 inches and 2.5-inch drive enclosures.
While manufacturers plough ahead with notebook targeted SSDs, questions arise as to whether they offer a performance increase significant enough to justify the higher cost. Avi Cohen, managing partner of bird flu securities can be found in the rate of return on notebooks Dell DSS varies from 20% to 30%. A spokesman for Dell, however, said the figures were “totally inaccurate by orders of magnitude.” The computer manufacturer has refused to release specific numbers.
Manufacturers of NAND flash memory, the memory technology used in the SSDs, hoping notebook adoption will give the industry a much-needed financial boost this year. Researcher iSuppli last month reduced its revenue outlook for 2008 the global market for NAND flash memory in single-digit percentage range from its previous estimate of an increase of 27%. Flash manufacturers have taken last year to 13.9 billion.
ISuppli has issued the warning “amid worrying signs of reductions in the order and weak consumer spending.”
No commentsCan desktops be portable?
Okay i just heard a story about some guys that actually used their desktops as a laptop. They brought their desktops to Starbucks just like people do with their laptops. I guess some people don’t know when to give up on Windows 95 and CRT monitors. No to be honest it was staged by these guys to see how people reacted when 2 guys and 1 girl brings 3 desktops to Starbucks. They pretended not to know each other under the experiment and they arrives and leaves at different times so that no one will know it was staged. They got 2 friends to film he whole thing with hidden cameras and the reactions are really funny. I however only have the pictures but they are really funny.

Here they are getting out their good old desktops with Windows 95.

Here you can see one of the guys filming the whole thing with a hidden cam. No on there actually saw that he was filming it. Even when the manager of Starbucks came out and talked with him, the manager told him “hey you cannot film these guys, they are paying customers”.

The other guy with hidden cam uses this device. It is a hidden micro cam in the glasses so he films wherever he looks.

Here is the first guy on his way too Starbucks. Looks pretty heavy as he carries the screen and has the CPU in the bag.

Here is the second guy and it looks like he also have some problems with his portable desktop because these things not very heavy.

Here is the guy with the glasses that features a hidden micro cam. He is pretending to read the news paper while he is filming his friends.

Now the second camera guy is in place as well. He remains outside of Starbucks while he films through the window from the outside.

Here is the first guy in place with his good old portable desktop at Starbucks.

Here he is again and he is the only guy with a Wi-Fi card so he can actually surf online, but as stingy as he is he decides not to pay for the T-Mobile access, and instead visited the only site he could browse for free, starbucks.com.

This black guy thinks that the desktop belongs to Starbucks and when the owner goes to get something to drink this black guy sits down on his desktop and start surfing and it took several minutes for the owner to explain to the black guy that this was his desktop.

People start to notice something strange when a girl enters with a desktop and boot up Windows 95 while she put the screen on her lap like it was a super modern laptop.

Here you see the girl setting up her old Dell desktop with Windows 95.

God i miss the old days when i was using Windows 95!

Now this just tops the cake, she actually takes the huge 60 pounds screen on her lap while she lay back relaxed and writes in Word 95.

Here you see her in full action while she writes in Word 95. Looks however pretty damn uncomfortable to me.

Here she is, at one point there was a crowd outside the window laughing at her, i am not sure if it was the Windows 95 boot up screen or the huge CRT monitor they laughed of the most.

This is the third and last guy and he got the biggest and heavyest desktop of them all. He used twice as long time as the other guys to get his desktop to Starbucks.

The poor guy is having major problems just lifting his MRT monitor up to the table.

So after a lot of hard work the 2 guys and the girl is together at Starbucks with their portable desktops.

These guys where actually waiting on the owners to move away from the desktops because they thought they were Starbucks desktops. The girl cracks up and laughs when one of the guys suddenly start to pack together the desktop she then ask why he is taking the Starbucks desktop away. The manager said it was not their laptops and he had never seen anything like it in 4 years but since they were all paying customers he could not do anything. The other guy on the pictire was another customer and he kept asking what’s the benefit of this. The manager said that they are probably students from across the street. After a while they all packed together and left at different times just like nothing happened.
No commentsAsus Eee gets upgrade and Windows

The 900 Eee come with Windows XP as an option - at an additional cost of the course, because of the license. The operating system will improve the resolution of the upgrade Eee, instead of 1024×600 pixels 800×480 pixels. Older Eee 701 will be available in Europe with Windows XP. Both will go on sale in April.
No commentsI got myself a Compaq Persario V3729TU!
Oki got this wonderful laptop a few days ago so now i write all my articles on it. It works excellent for my job and am really happy. I paid around 500$ for it i guess and it was the best specced laptop in its price class. It has a Celeron M 540 1866 MHz | 512 DDR2 667 | X3100 Intel Grapahic Adapter | 120 GB Disk | 256 3DMark06
I believe the reason why the 3dMark was so low is because my low ram. I am pretty sure if i add another 512 stick i could get almost 500 points. I can however play some decent games on it with good details and FPS. For example Half Life 2, Perfect World and of course WOW. Anyway i just had to share it with you guys and i recommend the laptop for all business men.
