Full-Color OLED Display
On May 24, Sony unveiled what it calls the first flexible, full-color organic electroluminescent display (OLED) built on organic thin-film transistor (TFT) technology. OLEDs typically use a glass substrate, but Sony researchers developed a new technology for forming organic TFT on a plastic substrate, which enables them to create a thin, light and flexible full-color screen. The prototype 2.5-inch display supports 16.8 million colors and 120 x 160 pixels (80 ppi, .318-mm pixel), is 0.3 mm thick and weighs 1.5 grams without the driver.
According to Sony, which plans to introduce a new range of miniature televisions this year, and strengthens efforts to develop next-generation flat-screen OLED, this new technology will lead to the development of thinner, lighter and more gentle electronic.
The company is scheduled to present its findings at the SID International Symposium 2007 currently underway in the United States.
